چکیده

We investigate the effect of edge defects vacancies and impurities substitutional dopants on the robustness of spin polarization in graphene nanoribbons GNRs with zigzag edges by using density-functionaltheory calculations. The stability of the spin state and its magnetic moments is found to continuously decrease with increasing the concentration of the defects or impurities. The system generally becomes nonmagnetic at the concentration of one edge defect impurity per 10 Å. The spin suppression is shown to be caused by the reduction and removal of edge states at the Fermi energy. Our analysis implies an important criterion on the GNR samples for spintronics applications.

Spin-polarized transport through a zigzag-edge graphene flake embedded between two armchair nanoribbons electrodes

We study the coherent spin-polarized transport through a zigzag-edge graphene flake (ZGF), using Hubbard model in the nearest neighbor approximation within the framework of the Green function’s technique and Landauer formalism. The system considered consists of electrode/ (ZGF)/electrode, in which the electrodes are chosen to be armchair nanoribbons. The study was performed for two types of ele...

Divacancy-induced ferromagnetism in graphene nanoribbons

Zigzag graphene nanoribbons have spin-polarized edges, antiferromagnetically coupled in the ground state with total spin zero. Customarily, these ribbons are made ferromagnetic by producing an imbalance between the two sublattices. Here we show that zigzag ribbons can be ferromagnetic due to the presence of reconstructed divacancies near one edge. This effect takes place even though the divacan...

Spin channels in functionalized graphene nanoribbons.

We characterize the transport properties of functionalized graphene nanoribbons using extensive first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) that encompass both monovalent and divalent ligands, hydrogenated defects, and vacancies. We find that the edge metallic states are preserved under a variety of chemical environments, while bulk conducting channels can be easily d...

Effects of nonmagnetic impurities on the spin transport property of a graphene nanoribbon device.

Using a nonequilibrium density functional calculation, we investigated the electronic transport properties and fundamental mechanism of spin polarization as a function of the location of impurities from the center to an edge of a graphene nanoribbon device (GND) with zigzag edges. A center-located impurity enables both edges to be enhanced with respect to their spin transports whereas an edge-l...

Magnetization profile for impurities in graphene nanoribbons

The magnetic properties of graphene-related materials, and in particular, the spin-polarized edge states predicted for pristine graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with certain edge geometries have received much attention recently due to a range of possible technological applications. However, the magnetic properties of pristine GNRs are not predicted to be particularly robust in the presence of edge d...
